Kuruluşu 1983'e, San Francisco Bay Area'ya uzanan grubun alt yapısı, Eric Peterson (gitar), kuzeni Derrick Ramirez (gitar) ve Louie Clemente (davul) tarafından oluşturuldu. Aralarına Steve Souza ve bascı Greg Christian'ı da katarak kendilerine 'Legacy' adını verdiler. Bazı anlaşmazlıklar sonucu Ramirez gitarı Alex Skolnick'e (lead gitar) devretti. Ramirez'in ayrılmasından hemen sonra ise Souza da grupla yollarını ayırdı. O sıralar Exodus'da yer alan Chuck Billy gruba katıldı ve kuruluşundan 3 sene sonra Legacy olan isim 'Testament' olarak değiştirildi.
1987'de 'The Legacy' adındaki Debut albümleriyle Bay Area'dan thrash fırtınası halinde yayılmaya başladılar. Albümün ses getirmesinin ardından Eindhoven'da yapılan The Dynamo Fest'e çıktılar. Burada kaydettikleri şarkılarla 'Live At Eindhoven' isimli EP'lerini piyasaya sürdüler. 1988'de 'The New Order' isimli çalışmaları Alex Perialas'ın prodüktörlüğünde kaydedildi. İçinde grup için önemli ve unutulmaz şarkıları barındıran albüm 'Testament' için 'Efsane' olmak yolunda önemli bir adımdır. 'The New Order' adıyla düzenledikleri turda ise dönemin önemli isimleri Megadeth, Voivod, Anthrax ve efsanevi Judas Priest gibi gruplarla konserler verdiler.
'Practice What You Preach' 1989'da yine Alex Perialas prodüktörlüğünde piyasaya sürüldü. Bu üçüncü albümleri dünya çapında 400.000 civarı satış rakamına ulaşmıştı. Bu albümde bir fark Bay Area thrash adıyla anılan hız ve tekniğin büyük önem taşıdığı türden daha melodik bir yapıya geçilmiş olmasıdır. 1990'da prodüktörlüğünü Michael Rosen'ın yaptığı 'Souls Of Black' albümü kaydedildi. 'Practice What You Preach' albümünün ardından Avrupa'da 'Clash Of The Titans' adıyla Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies gibi gruplarla çıktıkları uzun turneden döndükten sonraki bir ay içinde kaydedilen bu albümdeki şarkılar Testament'in belirli bir müzikal olgunluğa eriştiğini göstermesi açısından önemlidir. 1992 yılında 'The Ritual' isimli çalışmaları piyasaya çıktı. Bu albümün hemen ardından metal müziğe ilgisini kaybettiği gerekçesiyle Alex Skolnick gruptan ayrıldı ve jazz ile uğraşmaya etmeye başladı. Ardından da davulcu Clemente grupla yollarını ayırdı. 'Return To Apocalyptic City' Alex'in yerine gruba katılan (Forbidden) Glen Alvelais ve Paul Bostaph (Forbidden, Slayer) ile kaydedildi (1993). Özellikle 1992'den sonra gruba bir çok isim girdi ve çıktı. James Murphy (Death, Obituary, Disincarnate, Cancer) Alvelais yerine 1994'de çıkan 'Low' albümünde çaldı. Davuldaki Bostaph da boş durmadı ve albüm kayıtlarından önce o da ayrıldı. Yine Exodus'tan hatırlanabilecek John Tempes da 'Low'da davul başındaydı. Kayıtlardan sonra ise gruptan ayrılıp 'White Zombie'ye katıldı. Yerine John Dette (Evil Dead) geldi. Bu arada grup Dog Faced Gods adıyla death metale de şöyle bir uzandı.
'Live At The Fillmore' 1995'de yayınlandı. Büyük bir ilgi gördü. John Dette kayıtların hemen ardından ayrılıp Slayer'a katıldı. Chris Kontos gruba geldi.
'The Best Of Testament' 1996'da yayınlandı. Kayıtlara göre 1996'da gruptan hiç ayrılan olmamıştır. 1997'de Driftwood Studios'da kaydedilen 'Demonic' albümünün ardından James Murphy ve Greg Christian gruptaki yerlerini Glen Alvelais ve Derrick Ramirez'e bir kez daha bıraktılar. Chris Kontos sıkılmış olacak ki gene Hoglan'la (davulcu, Death, Dark Angel) yer değiştirdiler. Bu arada `Demonicen Brutal Testament` albümüdür. James Murphy gruptan aniden ayrıldığını açıkladı. Yerine Steve Smyth çıkacakları tur için gruba geçici olarak katıldı. Sonra da grupta kaldı. Bu arada Lombarda boş durmadı ve ayrıldı, yerine Steve Jacobs gruba katıldı.
2001 martında ise grubun hayranları geçici bir yasa büründüler. Chuck Billy'nin nadir görülen bir tür kansere yakalandığı haberi şoke etti. Aylar sonra ise Billy'nin kanseri yendiği haberi tüm hızıyla yayılıp insanları memnun etmişti.
2003'de ise grubun uzun süredir kadrosunu koruduğunu görülmekte. Billy, Peterson, Digiorgio, Smyth ve Allen'dan oluşan grup 'New Testament' adını almıştır.

Ben tam tersi 16'dan sonra grubu keşfedip sevmeye başladım (16'dan yaşı kastediyorsan eğer) ve 15 yıldır her zaman severek dinledim bu grubu Benim gibi melodik Hard Rock/metal aşığı bir insan niye sever böyle grupları diye aklıma gelir çok zaman.
Testament'in thrash anlayışı bana çok yakın geliyor. Gitar soundundan olabilir belki Biraz serserivari hisler uyandırıyor insanda Şöyle "hiçbişeyi dert etme hayatına bak" dercesine ritimler, melodiler var Testament'de. Hatta bir albümünü yanlışlıkla 2. defa almıştım
En çok sevdiğim albümü The Ritual'dir böylesine harika bir gitar soundunu başka bir Speed/thrash grubunda bulabilen varsa lütfen söylesin Onu da dinlemekten mahrum kalmayayım
"Practice what you preach" ve "Legacy" albümleride çok iyidir
Sadece "Low" albümünü biraz vasat bulmuştum ilk dinlediğim zamanlar. Ama geçenlerde tekrar dinlediğimde onunda keyif alınabilecek bir albüm olduğunu farkettim.
Testament bir albümü 3 haftada hazırlayıp piyasaya çıkardığı için eleştrilmiştir Hangisiydi şu an tam hatırlamıyorum. Ancak bu studyo aşaması olsa gerek herhalde _________________ Always On Rock!

According to a new press release, TESTAMENT lead vocalist, Chuck Billy, and founding guitarist, Eric Peterson have announced that original guitar player Alex Skolnick, and original bassist Greg Christian, and previous Testament drummer alumnist Johnny Tempesta, are joining them for a Reunion Tour in Europe, May 7 to May 15 ONLY. The tour will last for 9 shows only. Each of the other three musicians have other bands, projects, and recordings coming out, but they have all agreed to join forces with Chuck and Eric to blow out this limited reunion tour in May. Chuck Billy is quoted as saying: "I'm in music to enjoy it, and playing with my old band-mates after all these years will be killer!" Guitarist Alex Skolnick has issued the following message at his official website (www.alexskolnick.com) in regards to the upcoming TESTAMENT reunion tour:
“It is with great anticipation and excitement that I announce my plans to take in an upcoming Testament reunion tour (dates to be announced). It seems we've all reached a place where we have respect for one another on a personal and musical level. For these and whatever other reasons, the time feels right to revisit what began some twenty (!) years ago.
Testament was, is and will always be a part of me; everything I've done since has been largely possible due to my experience with Testament. I've never forgotten this, whether everyone realizes it or not. Just as my solo career was never meant as a rejection of Testament, or metal in general, my reconnect with Testament is not a rejection of my solo career.
Alex Skolnick Trio is busy touring in support of our second CD, Transformation (Magnatude). Next month, we appear at this years South By Southwest music conference/festival in Austin, TX. and have tour plans in the US and Europe throughout the year. (See www.alexskolnick.com for updated info).
In addition, the '04 TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA tour was the best yet and I look forward to more. There are also numerous other projects on the horizon. I feel very lucky to be where I am: at the top of my game and in a positive atmosphere where performing in more than one group (and even more than one genre) is accepted and supported.
The Testament guys have all come to see the Alex Skolnick Trio and genuinely seemed to enjoy the music. Similarly, the young guys in the trio are Testament fans and couldn't be more thrilled to see me doing this tour. This is partly what it's been all about for me: challenging conventional ideas about music and musicians themselves. Years ago, my heart told me to go find my own voice and I chose to listen. Now that I've found it, my heart's telling me it's a good tome to jump back in with Testament and have some fun.
Of course, this brings up inevitable questions: what does this all mean? Will there be more Testament tours like this? A recording? We honestly don't know and it would be unfair to ourselves and the fans to try to answer that. Let’s see how things go.
One thing I've learned over the years is that music, and to a greater extent, life itself, is about being in the moment: not what once happened, not what might happen, but what is happening right now. It's really cool, actually. I'm looking out the window and it's fuckin' snowing like a mofo! I like it cuz the vocal booth I'm doing my vocals in for the Dragonlord record has a window and it's so fucking cool to look out and see the water and the snow. But, the producer's not here goddammit! I'd like to sing some black metal right now!
So it sounds like you're staying busy.
Yeah, pretty good I guess. We're a little behind but we've got the drums and the guitars done. We're moving on to some atmospheric keyboards and bass.
Any idea on when that will be out?
We're looking at maybe a Fall release, maybe sooner.
There's just been some classic Testament footage released on DVD for the first time. How much participation did the band have with the Seen Between The Lines release?
We're definitely glad it's out there on the DVD format. It's something we wanted to do for a really long time. The whole VHS thing is kinda lame. There's some bonus Japanese footage on there that wasn't seen anywhere but Japan. It's cool because we didn't have it planned but we're doing a reunion tour. In May we're doing nine shows in Europe with Alex, Greg, and Louie. It came at a pretty cool time.
That's a big subject in itself. I'm stoked it's happening, but it's in Europe!
Well, Europe's got festivals and it's just a normal thing here. They're very organized with it. It's like going to Ozzfest but it's more laid back, not so controlled. They'll set up a tent out in the middle of the country and they'll have big stages. It's like going to the Renaissance Fair but with music. It's really cool. I really wish they had something like that in the states that wasn't as commercial as Ozzfest where half the bands are paying to be on it. The other half are kissing someone's ass to be on it! Over here they've got so many festivals that you could go see any cool band, really.
There are rumors flying that some killer established bands that have been around a while will be on Ozzfest this year. I've heard a reunited Testament is supposed to take part.
Hmm. I don't think so. Hmm. I've been stuck in the snow here and I just found out about an hour ago that you were going to call! I'm so lost in this music that I haven't really been keeping up with other things.
So, what happens if these nine reunion shows blow everyone away? What then?
Hopefully we're all blown away and we...I told Chuck when we were working on our new record that it's hard to get into it because we've gone through so many different members. We've had members where I've thought 'This is it!' and then someone leaves, we'll get a new member and I'll think, 'OK, this is it!' I'm at the point now, I haven't told Chuck, if we do another record I'd rather have the original lineup. Even if they just did the record and we did some festivals, that would be the way to go. That's just the way I'm feeling right now. I'm sure we can...we're actually getting ready to ...last Summer we worked with Metal Mike from Halford and he's amazing. He's really good. He would be cool to work with. I talked to Alex (Skolnick) before I left to come out here. I told him I though it was time for us to fucking get together and do a record. I didn't know what he was gonna say. He kinda went, 'Yeah, I think so!' He told me, 'I'm playing rock again!' I told him, 'Cool, man! I'm playing black metal! Let's put those two together and see what happens.' I think the original lineup is definitely the band.
If an Ozzfest situation presented itself...
Yeah, that's a very big thing to do. It would be different if we inquired about it and tried to buy into it. I wouldn't be into that. If they wanted Testament I would definitely be into that. That's just my opinion. Chuck doesn't really like to tour that much anymore. Again, it was Chuck's idea to put this reunion together! He just said..we had this long conversation and he said, (in a deep Chuck-type voice) 'I'm not touring anymore' and a week later he says 'We're going on tour.' Woah! Killer!
All nine shows are back-to-back, right?
Yeah. And we're supposed to come back over here in July. Hopefully this works out. I never thought we should all move into the same town and just focus on Testament. I don't think that would be the way to do it. Let's just meet up, get together for a couple of weeks and record something, and maybe book some big shows for a couple of weeks in the States and do Japan and Europe. It would be more special, too. It would be more fun for us rather than being on the road for two or three months. We don't really need to break ourselves anymore. We've got our cult following and we are who we are.
When will you start rehearsals for the May shows?
The middle of April. I'll be home in about three weeks, take a week off and then I'll get in there and start on the set.
What will the setlist be like?
Management keeps calling me up and asking what the set is. It's always been me first. I'll write out a list and Chuck will maybe change a couple of songs and Alex will throw 'em right back in. We're definitely be doing a lot of the older stuff. I don't think we'll be playing anything from Gathering and Low, maybe. We'll see. I definitely want to do some stuff that we haven't done in a while, like "The Ballad." That's a really cool song to do live, the way it builds up. Maybe some crazy stuff we've never played before like "Seven Days Of May" off of Souls Of Black.
It keeps sounding more and more like I need to book a flight to Europe in May!
You might wanna look into that. I mean Anthrax is doing something with Belladonna again and that's pretty cool. They even got Dan Spitz. Joey, Frankie, and everybody. That to me is Anthrax. I like John Bush's voice a lot but I actually like him better with Armored Saint. Anthrax Among The Living and Spreading The Disease are killer. You can't really replace a singer. Some bands get lucky, like Van Halen, but they went in a totally different direction.
Yeah, they tried it again with Gary Cherone and it totally bombed!
Yeah! Then you've got bands like Black Sabbath who had Dio. That was cool. To me, if Chuck didn't want to do it anymore I would not get anybody else. Chuck's such a big part of Testament. Well, unless Dio wanted to sing with me. I've got the Dio riffs, shit! I'll hook him up. I'll show him how he's supposed to do it! (laughs)
How long will your set be for the reunion gigs?
Anywhere from 50 to 60 minutes, maybe a little more. If we do some headlining shows, maybe an hour and a half. Solid Testament. The last time we played together we could not play "Over The Wall," we just couldn't thrash anymore. Maybe because of Louie, his playing kinda went downhill. I talked to him recently and he's been playing again. He's excited to play that stuff again. Metallica went through that phase. Lars could not fucking play their old shit. I saw 'em about a year ago and they played their first four records. Lars just tore it up, so maybe sometimes you just go through a rut. I'm excited to play our heavy shit again like "Over The Wall," "Alone In The Dark," "Burnt Offerings," and "New Order." With the original lineup that's going to be killer.
You've gotta be pretty fired up just going into the rehearsals.
Yeah, it's gonna be a lot of fun.
We just talked about the new DVD and I noticed there are a few "bootleg" DVDs on the Testament website. Are those from the band's archives?
Yeah, it's our personal stuff. We've got stuff from every show. We'll go, 'Remember the Country Club in '89?' That's the next one that's coming out, the Country Club in LA. That's a killer show. I just edited that before I left. What's cool about the bootlegs is we don't just get the tape and burn it onto DVD. We sit down and spend some money with an editing company and mark the edits and try to make a pretty cool menu. The Tilburg show that's up now has a slideshow and a loop of a girl screaming 'Testament!' It's cool but it gets a little annoying. It's not retail material, but neither was the Blair Witch project. Those DVDs are our Blair Witch, bitch! (laughs)
Where do you think metal is best received? Would it be Europe because of the opportunities you have there?
Yeah, for our kind of music. Definitely. Look at the bands that we've influenced and they do really good here. Bands like Soilwork, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Meshuggah...the kind of bands that took off where we left off. They took it and made it really killer and more polished. A lot of the American bands, I think we've always been more of a European style band as far as our influences. Mercyful Fate, Thin Lizzy, Maiden, Sabbath. Those are all European bands. To answer your question, it's definitely Europe. There are at least 20 big festivals in the Summer that are equal to Ozzfest. Shit, the US only has one. Another reason that it's so easy out here is because the US has so many different types of people. There's a lot of security issues in America. Like the Sweden Rock Festival in Sweden is all Swedes. Maybe some Germans come over. They're like, 'We're all Swedish and we're all cool with each other.' (laughs) In the US there are all kinds of people. Does that make sense?

N/Nevermind , Megadeth/Countdown...ve Testament-Return to Apocalyptic City.Return to Serenity'i dinlediğimde işte şarkı bu demiştim.Ne güzel zamanlardı.Souls of Black tişörtünü 5 sene giymişimdir.İlk aldığımda siyahtı,5 sene sonra iyice solmuş rengi griye dönmüştü ben hala giyiyordum.Annem oğlum bari yenisi al,yırtılmış artık diyordu ama ı-ıh.
Bir gün eve geldim bir baktımki tişört yok olmuş,atılmış.Çok kızmıştım,artık giymeği değil hatıra olarak saklamayı düşünüyordum ama olan olmuştu.
Gerçi Souls.... pek sevdiğim bir albümleri değildir.Albümdeki Souls of Black,Face in..,The Legacy'yi severim.
Tabi bunlar eskidendi,askere gittim geldim 2 sene oldu şimdi pek bir heyecan kalmadı,arasırada olsa hala severek dinliyorum.
Bu arada ben Low ve Low'dan öncesini seviyorum.The Gathering,Demonic hoşuma gitmiyor.
Testament dinlediğim zamanlarda bir tek ben dinliyorum zannederdim çoğu zaman.Aslında bir miktar doğrudur,çünkü The Gathering çıkana kadar çoğu kimsenin bu gruptan haberi yoktu.Albüm bir çıktı herkes Testament'çı oldu.Bir de albümde Dave Lombardo,Steve vs olunca oooo baba yaa.Bence bu adamların olması/olmaması albümü iyi veya kötü yapmıyor.
Şu aralar çoğunlukla caz ve türevlerini dinlesemde,Testament gelirse koşa koşa giderim,şimdilik bu kadar....
Bir şey daha,uzun zaman sonra metalden soğuma rağmen beni tekrar ateşleyebilecek bir grup keşfettim.Rage....şimdilik Trapped(1992) albümünü dinleyebildim,çok güzel parçalar var.Bu grubu bilen,dinleyen varmı merak ediyorum.Bulabilirseniz Trapped albümünü bir dinleyin iyimi değil mi siz karar verin,cevaplarınızı bekliyorum.

TESTAMENT - Chuck Billy Explains "How This All Started" [Hot Flashes - 05.03.30 18:46:17]
TESTAMENT vocalist Chuck Billy posted the following in the band's official forum earlier today:
Well it is really happening Alex (Skolnick), Greg (Christian), Johnny T. (Tempesta), Eric (Peterson), Me and Louie C. (Clemente). We are joining together to play some shows in Europe in May and a few in the U.S. in June. We are all stoked. It's funny how things work out.
One day I was talking to the promoter of the Dynamo Festival in the Netherlands and he told me he had the original ANTHRAX line up doing the show this year. I said Testament has to play the show. He asked what are the chances of the original Testament playing. I said "Hummm" that would be cool let me give everyone a call and ask. So I did.
I called Alex first. he said that sounded cool but let me check my schedule. Than I seen Greg and asked him. He said I think we can work something out. Next call was Johnny. He said that sounded killer but he had to check his tour schedule with HELMET. After all the calls I said holy shit this really might happen. So I'm thinking I have to call Louie. Me and Lou have kept in contact over the years and we have talked about this day. So I called and he was pumped, he said he was going to start working on the songs immediately. If you're wondering why two drummers, it's because when this came about we knew Lou hasn't played for a while so he would need time to get his chops back for a few songs. Lou has been working hard and said things are feeling pretty good. Johnny of cousre kicks ass on our stuff so it's always a pleasure to get to play live with Johnny.
It's funny how things work out. In 1987 all of us were going to perform at the Dynamo festival. This was our first time to ever play outside the US. We were very excited about the event. It was our first tour in Europe with Anthrax. Now here we are 18 years later getting all fired up about going to play the Dynamo with the guys who were there in Anthrax in 1987. 9 günlük bir konser için ilk 5 albümdeki Testament kadrosu toplanıyor. Bunlara ek olarak John Tempesta da gelecek. Yani 2 davulcu gidecek turneye Nasıl çalacaklar onu bilmiyorum. Yalnız okuduğum birkaç yazıya göre Louie eskisi gibi çalamıyormuş. Hızlı şarkılarda batırıyormuş. Belki onun için Tempesta'yı almışlardır yanlarına. Ayrıca son iki albümden hiç şarkı çalmayacaklar.
Şöyle bir olay da var, sanırım bu sene sonuna doğru kaydedilecek olan yeni Testament albümünde Alex soloları atacakmış. İşte bu gerçekten aşmış bir haber.

Yıllar önce, Antrax grubu üyeleri, Bir MTV reportajında, Metallica'yı küçümserken, Testament'ıda Metallica taklidi olmakla suçluyordu (Metallica'nın greamy ödülü aldığı '91-92 gibi bir tarihti)
Şimdi o Metallica'dan eser yok. Antrax'ı fazla takip etmedim ama eski kalitesinde olduğunu pek zannetmiyorum.
Testament ise, speed/thrash metal tarihinin en sağlam gruplarından biri bence.
Dilerim, The Legacy, The New Order veya The Ritual kalitesinde bir albüm yaparlar ve özlenen thrash metal'ı tekrar yaşatırlar.. _________________ Always On Rock!
