Konu: Dreamtone, ortaklaşa düzenlenecek gösteriler, stüdyo çalışmaları ve bir senfoni orkestrası ile beraber düzenlenecek bir konser dizisi için Yunan sanatçı Iris Mavraki ile bir araya geliyor.

Dreamtone solisti Oganalp Canatan, proje ile ilgili olarak “Iris Mavraki ile yapacağımız bu proje, görüşümüzü genişletmek adına bize çok yardımcı olacak. Senfoni orkestrası ile çalışmak bir yana, her zaman Iris gibi harika bir sanatçı ile çalışmak bile mümkün değil! Ve bu, bizim yaşımızdaki insanlar için ancak ömür boyu düşlediğimiz bir hayalin gerçekleşmesi olarak tanımlanabilir!” dedi.
Yunanistan’ın Rodos adasından gelen Iris, kısa bir süre önce, Mart ayında İzmir’de ve Nisan ayında Rodos’ta, Dokuz Eylül Senfoni Orkestrası ile birlikte, Türk-Yunan Bestecileri ve Şairleri temalı, Türk ve Yunan şiir ve bestelerinden derlenmiş bir dizi konser verdi. Bazı Yunan müzisyenler tarafından da eşlik edilen Iris ve DESO ayrıca, daha önce bir benzeri olmayan, Sabancı Kültür Sarayı’nda ve Rodos Ulusal Tiyatrosu’nda konser verme şansı yakaladı.
Aynı zamanda yeni İzmir Tiyatrosu’nun 15 Kasım 2005 tarihindeki açılışında, DESO ile konser vermek üzere Konak Belediyesi Başkanı Muzaffer Tunçağ tarafından İzmir’e davet edilen Mavraki, 30 Aralık tarihinde de İzmir Devlet Orkestrası’nın konuğu olarak, bir konser verecek.
Iris Mavraki ve Dreamtone, Mavraki’den gelen ve Türkiye’de bir ilk olacağı düşünülen, “senfoni orkestrası ile beraber bir rock konseri verme” teklifi üzerine zaten bir süredir iletişim halindeydiler ve besteler üzerinde fikir alışverişinde bulunuyorlardı. Genç insanlar ve müzisyenler ile çalışmanın yaratıcılık açısından gerekli olduğunu düşünen Mavraki, bu birlikteliğin harika sonuçlar çıkartacağına inanıyor.

Back in 2004, my colleague Fellix reviewed Dreamtone’s demo “Unforeseen Reflections” and even though he had some remarks about it, it was received very well. Now, a small year and a half later, the band released “Sojourn”, their first full album even though they are still unsigned to any label.
“Sojourn” is a concept album, dealing with the story of an angel how is deceived and is now searching for a way back to his family, as well as his personal peace of mind. This story is told in eleven tracks and also features six spoken tracks, told by nobody less then Gary Wehrkamp, known most for his voice of the alien “Forever” on Ayreon’s “Into the Electric Castle” album and of course his work in Shadow Gallery.
I guess Dreamtone has gone further where their last album started, since “Sojourn” also features a progressive sound. Often sounding very melodic, at other times much heavier and I even heard a occasional Viking-metal part in between, but always technically very high. Even though the band see themselves carrying a lot of elements from band like Symphony X, In Flames and Dream Theater, I don’t agree with this. They might take some influences from them but they take these to their own level and create a great own sound. Combine this with the great diversity in the tracks themselves and the carefully chosen collaboration with singer Yasemin Genç in the semi-epic-ballad “Come to Me” makes this a very good album. A thing that irritated me at first though, was the voice of Oganalp Canatan, which I found very irritating and hard to listen to. But after a few spins it grew on me, but I still find it hard to listen to from time to time. The last thing I want to mention is the production. I have to say that this has been a superb job. If they hadn’t mention that it was a independent release, I wouldn’t have noticed it. Of course, with a name like Jim Brick (Shadow Gallery, James LaBrie) behind the buttons there isn’t much that can go wrong.
With “Sojourn” the young (Average age: 21) Turkish rockers from Dreamtone deliver an excellent debut album. I bet that we will hear a lot of these guys in the future, and frankly, I can’t wait for the next encounter.

Sojourn'a yurt içinden ikinci kritiği geldi;
Dreamtone – Sojourn (Metal Pit)
Ankaralı genç grup Dreamtone’un 2006 başlarında çıkması planlanan albümü “Sojourn”u, promosu elime geçtiğinden beri düzenli olarak dinlemekteyim. Bu sene beni en çok şaşırtan Türk grubu olan Disenchant’dan sonra, Dreamtone’un da aynı etkiyi yaptığını söyleyebilirim. “Sojourn”, albüm kapağından beste düzenlemelerine kadar gayet profesyonel ve özenli bir çalışma olduğunu daha ilk saniyelerinden hissettiren bir albüm olmuş. Mastering’i Jim Brick (Shadow Gallery, Dream Theater elemanlarının solo projeleri, vesaire) tarafından Amerika’da yapılan albümün sound’u her enstrumanı ayrı ayrı gayet güzel duymanıza olanak veriyor. Tabii ki bir Dream Theater ya da Pain Of Salvation albümü kadar temiz ve canlı bir kayıt yok ama bir yerli albüm için sevindirici düzeyde iyi buldum sound’u. Albümün sözleri elimde olmadığı için, lirik konsepti Oganalp’in ve konuk anlatıcı Gary Wehrkamp’ın (Shadow Gallery) söylediklerinden anlamaya çalıştım. Kapak çalışmasıyla örtüşen bir konusu var demek mümkün sanırım.
Albüm “Sojourn” ile gayet iyi bir açılış yapıyor. Parçanın ana melodisi “ah şimdi burada bir gitar olsaydı da çalsaydım” diye düşünmemi sağlayacak kadar hoşuma gitti. Özellikle davulda Emrecan’ın performansını oldukça beğendim (zaten albüm genelinde çok iyi). Kısa anlatımdan sonraki “Behind The Face”i de oldukça beğendim, ama beşinci sıradaki enstrumantal Escape’e adeta hayran kaldım. Her anı kusursuz bir parça. Başlarında yerel ezgiler de barındıran bu parça, eski Ominous Grief klavyecisi Ozan Alparslan’ın parmaklarından ve gitarlardan çıkan muhteşem melodilerle adeta müzikal bir şölene dönmüş. Özellikle ilk iki buçuk dakikasına bayıldım. Bahsetmişken, albümün genelinde çok çok iyi bir klavye kullanımı olduğunu belirtmeliyim. Hem seçilen sound’lar, hem de melodiler açısından klavye müziğe çok şey katmış. Çok acıklı ve vurucu bir melodisi olan bu parçayla Dreamtone ilerde neler yapabileceğinin sinyallerini veriyor.
Altıncı parça “Reasons” da favorilerimden. Bu parça özellikle 1.48’de patlamasını yapıyor ve 2.36’da giren Iron Maiden-vari melodilerle doruğa çıkıyor. Çok başarılı.
Bir sonraki “Come To Me”, açılışındaki düetle ve yine harika diyebileceğim klavye kullanımıyla dikkat çeken enfes bir parça. Oganalp’in “Mother i’m a guest..” bölümünde söylediği vokal melodisine hasta oldum dersem abartmış olmam. Aynı zamanda bu şarkı Oganalp’in Hansi Kürsch etkilenimini en rahat olarak gördüğüm parça diyebilirim. Ama bahsettiğim şey bir taklit değil. Ben de Hansi’nin sesine aşık olduğumdan olsa gerek, bu Hansi-vari vokal yorumları her seferinde yüzümde bir tebessüm oluşmasına neden oluyor.
Sekizinci sıradaki “The Teaser” parçası güzel ve akıcı olmasına rağmen albümün öne çıkan parçalarından değil diye düşünüyorum. “This Is Goodbye” içinse yorumlarım gayet olumlu. Oganalp’in çift vokalli kısımları Blind Guardian tatları estirse de, dediğim gibi bu benim hoşuma gidiyor. Bu şarkıyla ilgili diğer bir ayrıntı da, şarkının 12. ve 14. saniyeleri arasında “In Flames – Artifacts Of The Black Rain” başladı sanmam ve “nası yani?” tepkisi vermemdi. Üst notadan çalınan gitar iki saniyeliğine de olsa tam olarak aynı notayı bastığından olsa gerek.
“Nightmare”in melodileri çok yaratıcı gelmedi açıkçası ama şarkı kendini dinleten ve “yine” klavyenin başarılı efekt seçimleriyle dikkat çeken bir parça. On üçüncü “Riot” akılda kalıcı vokal melodileri ve dur kalklarıyla, oldukça dinamik yapıda bir şarkı. İki anlatım bölümünden sonra gelen “Nemesis” ise, grubun acıklı yönünün coşkulu yönünden daha başarılı olduğunu düşünmemi sağlayan bir diğer parça. Özellikle 1.44-2.07 arasındaki melodi, albümün en iyilerinden. Melodi değişimlerinden, klavyenin arada attırdığı atonal bölümlere, bu şarkı belki de albümün en progresif metal parçası. Son şarkıya, yani “Epilogue”a geldiğimizde, ilk enstrumantal “Escape”teki başarının tekrarlandığını görüyoruz. Klavyenin sürüklediği bu parçayla albüm sona eriyor.
Öncelikle grubu bu konsept çalışmanın altından başarıyla kalktıkları için kutluyorum. Albümdeki şarkılar belli bir bütünlüğe sahipler ve öylesine konmuş hiçbir parça yok diyebilirim. Eğer eleştiri getirebileceğim noktalar neler diye sorulursa, bazı soloların daha akıcı olabileceklerini, bazı şarkıların ilk ya da son yarılarının diğer yarılarına göre daha sıradan olduklarını söyleyebilirim. Ama bunlar albümün artılarının yanında pek fazla göze batmayan şeyler.
Özellikle “Sojourn”, “Escape”, “Reasons”, “Come To Me”, “Riot” ve “Nemesis”i çok beğendiğimi, “Escape” ile “Come To Me”ye ayrıca bayıldığımı söyleyebilirim.
Grubun progresif metal adına çığırlar açmadığını, ancak bu tür altında gayet samimi bir çalışma ortaya koyduğunu söyleyerek kritiği sonlandırıyorum. Deneyim kazandıkça, enstruman kullanımları zamanla daha da geliştikçe ve bu profesyonel yaklaşımları devam ettikçe, Dreamtone Türk metali adına mutlak bir kazanç olacaktır. “Sojourn”u çıktığı gibi mutlaka almanızı öneririm. Türü seviyorsanız pişman olmazsınız. Ha tabi bir de bugüne kadar bir Türk metal grubu tarafından sunulan en iyi klavye performensını kaçırmak istemiyorsanız.

Öncelikle grubu bu konsept çalışmanın altından başarıyla kalktıkları için kutluyorum. Albümdeki şarkılar belli bir bütünlüğe sahipler ve öylesine konmuş hiçbir parça yok diyebilirim. Eğer eleştiri getirebileceğim noktalar neler diye sorulursa, bazı soloların daha akıcı olabileceklerini, bazı şarkıların ilk ya da son yarılarının diğer yarılarına göre daha sıradan olduklarını söyleyebilirim. Ama bunlar albümün artılarının yanında pek fazla göze batmayan şeyler.
Özellikle “Sojourn”, “Escape”, “Reasons”, “Come To Me”, “Riot” ve “Nemesis”i çok beğendiğimi, “Escape” ile “Come To Me”ye ayrıca bayıldığımı söyleyebilirim.
Grubun progresif metal adına çığırlar açmadığını, ancak bu tür altında gayet samimi bir çalışma ortaya koyduğunu söyleyerek kritiği sonlandırıyorum. Deneyim kazandıkça, enstruman kullanımları zamanla daha da geliştikçe ve bu profesyonel yaklaşımları devam ettikçe, Dreamtone Türk metali adına mutlak bir kazanç olacaktır. “Sojourn”u çıktığı gibi mutlaka almanızı öneririm. Türü seviyorsanız pişman olmazsınız. Ha tabi bir de bugüne kadar bir Türk metal grubu tarafından sunulan en iyi klavye performensını kaçırmak istemiyorsanız.

Two years ago a pleasant surprise from Turkey landed on my doormat. Dreamtone's first offering I described as "a diamond in the rough". And now it is time to have a listen at the second offering. For me the most obvious question would be, "did the diamond get to be more polished"?
The answer to that is: yes. Yes, because this album is much more mature and less "messy" than the previous one. Unfortunately that also means that some of the young men's enthusiasm of the previous work has gone. The album is more balanced but this balance pushed out some of the speedier work. It does not mean however that Sojourn is a boring album: on the contrary: the atmosphere is a bit more gloomy, there is a more important role for the keyboards but also still for the up tempo guitars.
The voice of Oganalp Canatan is not one that everyone will instantly like, in fact it will probably not be liked by many. Personally though I have always liked a characteristic voice and Oganalp certainly has that, so he has my support. It is something to distinguish Dreamtone from other bands.
The music on this album appears to take you from recognition point to recognition point ("was that a piece of Iron Maiden", huh? "That was like the tune to Buffy The Vampire Slayer ". "Bit of Metallica there"). The band makes no effort to hide their references. But "not hiding" is not the same as copying, Dreamtone's music can stand on it's own perfectly. But to give an idea of what to expect: think Blind Guardian, Iron Maiden, Dream Theater and Ayreon.
This concept album tells an interesting story both musically and in the narrations done by Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery). It is the story of an angel who is tricked by the gods to give up his soul. The narration are counterparts of atmosphere and tranquillity to the music. The voice of Gary Wehrkamp works really well for that. Two other guests also participate on this album, Ozan Alparsan (keyboards) and Yasmin Genc (vocals), and because they are excellent additions, in my opinion both should be added to the band.
The artwork is by a young artist, Kerem Beyit, who has also done some artwork for book covers (mainly Turkish). The cover fits to the story but leaves enough to the listener's imagination.
From the first tones of Sojourn it is clear that Dreamtone has once again created crafty loops and pumping rhythms. All embedded in compositions that do have a point. Dreamtone's music is clever and has enough turns and changes to keep your attention. The emotions of the story are very much conveyed by the music and lyrics. But the fact that Dreamtone is taking me from recognition point to recognition point instead of surprising me makes me come back to the first question - Dreamtone did not fulfil the promise I thought they would (but still think they can).
This does not mean that this is a bad album, on the contrary, I have very much enjoyed this one but it is not the masterpiece I expected (or hoped) it to be. Maybe the fact that there is so much talent in this band made me hope for even more. So this small disappointment is caused by my expectations not by the bands doing. Dreamtone has delivered a firm prog metal album with a well thought out story, good compositions and deserve appreciation for that. So if you like good traditional progressive metal in the style of the bands described above: Dreamtone is a sure bet. I have been very much doubting to DPRP recommend or not, but when there is doubt the answer is already given.

ROBS REVIEW: Ahhh, Power Metal. Those endless streams of majestic melodies flowing through the veins of virtuoso musicians with thoughts of dragons and swords dancing in unison to the sound of way too mu8ch practicing to hold down a day job. (What the hell did I just say?) Dreamtone is not so much majestic as say Rhapsody or Blind Guardian but they do carry the torch of this genre adequately. Unlike a lot of Power Metal this is not filled with endless double bass runs and full blown orchestral arrangements but, alas, has tons of groove and catchy mid paced rhythms thoughtfully written and arranged into a nice little journey through, I'm sure, SOME kind of enchanted land. I love this style and one thing that really makes or breaks it for me is usually the vocals. And Oganap Canatan passes the test. Barely. Not your typical Power/Prog vocalist but more resembling a tad mellower version of Matthew Barlow formerly of Iced Earth or even a little of the clean vocal delivery of Mikael Stanne from Dark Tranquility. It's definitely a more straight forward Heavy Metal vocal attack than anything power that's going on these days, but definitely not a bad thing. I know Dreamtone form their debut demo CD back in 2003. After two years of hard work these guys from Turkey achieved to release their debut self financed album with the title "Sojourn". In these seventeen tracks the band has a lot of narrations made by Gary Wehrkamp, the keyboard/guitar player from SHADOW GALLERY. Musically the band is definitely in the progressive metal side but since they are open minded musicians they have elements from the classic heavy metal and even from the Swedish melodic death metal scene. Their compositions are well worked and you can easily see that the band has worked hard in the past two years in order to release this album. Another thing that I adore on this album is the way that the band puts the tracks in order, something which gives you a cinematic view, it is like a movie only you don't see the movie you just hear it. Well the progressive metal fans have one more band in order to hear their work because this year we had some really great releases in the progressive metal scene.
