FCB1010 Expression Pedals
The FCB has two expression pedals, usually referred to as pedals A and B. These pedals can be used to control real time MIDI parameters such as volume, Wah-Wah, distortion level, reverb level, or other MIDI parameters supported by your MIDI gear.
Many new FCB units ship with the expression pedals "out of calibration". In simple terms, the pedals will not work correctly until a calibration procedure is performed. Click here for a PDF file that provides a step by step approach for this process.
For each FCB preset, either or both pedals can be enabled for use. Thus one preset might have pedal A enabled for volume control and B not used. Another patch might have a enable for volume and B enabled for guitar Wah-Wah control.
For each preset you can control the MIDI Change Controller (CC) used by the pedal as well as the default range (from min to max positions). The MIDI channel for each pedal cannot be controlled at the preset level and is set to a single value in global setup.
Volume Control
Using an expression pedal to control volume is one of the typical uses. Most MIDI gear supports MIDI volume using CC #7. This is true for all Line POD gear and Behringer V-Amp units.
Many users find it convenient to set the minimum value at a level that provides a good default rhythm volume. Then the pedal can easily be used to control lead level and return to a set rhythm level by moving the pedal all the way back up.
Wah-Wah Control
Many guitar players may want one pedal to control the Wah-Wah effect in their MIDI effects unit. This is very common for users with Line 6 POD gear, or Behringer V-Amp effects.
The Files section of the Yahoo FCB1010 site includes a number of How To files on this subject.
For Line 6 POD gear, this setup varies by POD version. The POD 2.0 and POD Pro units operate somewhat differently than the more recent XT versions of these products.
Both the XT and older non-XT POD units use CC#4 to control the Wah level. Both also use CC#43 to turn Wah on/off. However there is a key difference in the way each works.
In the POD 2.0/POD Pro series, any movement on the Wah values, from say moving the expression pedal set for Wah control, automatically turns the Wah function inside the POD unit on. This means that using the expression pedal is all that is required to turn on Wah and use the pedal to control it.
In the POD XT series, movement on the Wah values does NOT automatically turn on the function. One must send the specific CC#43 value to turn the Wah on for the XT series.
Fortunately the FCB has the ability, using the CC1 and CC2 preset options, to control this feature. The FCB can send out two separate CC values for each preset. These are sometimes used to control other things like keyboard bank selection for keyboard users. However when the CC values for CC1 and CC2 are set to the same CC value, the operation is different.
POD XT Setup
For the POD XT, CC#43 is used to turn the Wah effect on and off. A send value of 0 turns Wah off and a send value of 127 turns Wah on. Here is what you do:
Set the change controller for CC1 to 43
Set the change controller for CC2 to 43
Set the send value for CC1 to 0
Set the send value for CC2 to 127
Assign expression B (A or B could be used) to change controller 4
Assign the expression range from 0 to 127.
To use the Wah, then do the following:
Select a preset where the above settings are set. Wah will initially be turned off.
When you want the Wah effect, press the same preset button again. This will turn the Wah on
Use the expression pedal to control it as desired
When done, press the preset button again, and Wah turns off.
POD 2.0/POD Pro Setup
The setup and operation is much easier for the earlier non-XT models.
Set the change controller for CC1 to 43
Set the send value for CC1 to 0
Assign expression B (A or B could be used) to change controller 4
Assign the expression range from 0 to 127.
To use the Wah, then do the following:
Select a preset where the above settings are set. Wah will initially be turned off.
When you want the Wah effect, start using the expression pedal, which turns the Wah on immediately.
Use the expression pedal to control it as desired
When done, press the preset button again, and Wah turns off
