Perceived output level: The bridge position DESTROYS ALL OTHER PICKUPS OUT THERE! It kills them because of the output, well balanced tone and price. What more could you ask for? I have been playing for 16 years. I have tried every fucking pickup there is at this point. For metal, it seems like the EMG 81/85 or Duncan JB seems to be the standard nowadays. For metal at least. Now, i won't argue that those are good pickups, I like them too, but this pickup is one bad ass mother fucker. I think people think these pickups must suck because of the price..that's just not true. There's no "status" in overpaying, people. This is an excellent pickup. Paying twice as much money for one of these would still be worth it.
Tone: As for the bridge position, it has a Smooth low end. Not muddy at all. Everything is nicely balanced over the entire frequency range, actually. Well defined mids make it cut through and the high end is just right. There's not TOO much high end in these to make the sound shrill and piercing. All around round tone. Excellent. AS FOR THE NECK POSITION: It leave a bit to be desired. I prefer a thicker, saturated, dark neck pickup tone. The motherbuck in this position is a little bright and thin sounding. It still sounds pretty good, but I may change it to something else down the line. I can live with it for now. They sure do look cool though. Black pole pieces are a nice touch. Makes it look very heavy metal.
Sonic evaluation: I'm playing this pickup through a Caparison Dellinger strat style guitar with mahogany body. My cab is a 4x12 Mesa Boogie Recto cab with Vintage 30's, the head is a solid state Peavey XXL. For live and in the studio, it's all straight into the head. No effects. Just a Boss tuner pedal and a Boss Noise suppressor pedal. At home i run a super cheap Digitech RP100 processor through the effects loop of the same setup....anyways....it sounds good. So basically, I have quality equipment going here, but nothing too extravagant. I can create a Total death metal nuclear meltdown tone with this set up. Then, i can jump to a crystal clear surf guitar tone...all with the same pickups. No problem. Very versatile pickups. The motherbucker neck pu sounds better clean than overdriven, in my opinion. Just ease back on the guitar volume knob a bit to take the edge off. The neck pu is still pushing out 17k ohms, unlike most neck pus in the 12k range. Going balls out volume on clean will result a supershitty mess for sure.
